As far as the New Forest pony is concerned, only mares (females) and young colts (immature males) are allowed to roam freely on the Forest. In order to control the number of foals born in the light of prevailing market conditions for pony sales and to ensure that foals are born on the Open Forest at a time of year when food is in plentiful supply, the Stallion Scheme was introduced. This scheme limits the number of stallions (mature males) that are allowed on the Forest for a short period during early early summer.
The New Forest Verderers manage the Scheme and select suitable stallions to ensure that bloodlines remain strong. The 2014 scheme runs from 19 May until 16 June when only 10 stallions will be allowed onto the Forest. Details of these stallions and their areas can be found by clicking here.
