Environment Secretary Owen Paterson announced today (31 January) that the Government was in broad agreement with the Panel Report and confirmed that the public forest estate would not be sold off. He also announced that a new independent body would be set up to own, maintain and safeguard the public forest estate for future generations and that it would have greater independence from Government. In the short term there will be a modest increase in funding for the Forestry Commission, which body is to be subject to a review of its operations.
